Walther Schucking

Walther Adrian Schucking (1875 to 1935) was a German liberal politician and scholar of international law born in Munster, Prussia. He was the first German judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice at The Hague, and earlier took part in an inquiry into the Balkan Wars of 1913 and 1914, represented Germany at the Paris Peace Conference after the First World War, and sat in the Weimar National Assembly and the Reichstag from 1919 to 1928. He argued for permanent international organizations and contributed to the development of the concept of peremptory norms in international law, and advised China's government in the 1920s on ending foreign extraterritoriality. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times between 1918 and 1934 and died in The Hague in 1935.
