Jose Luis Bustamante y Rivero (1894 to 1989) was a Peruvian jurist and statesman born in Arequipa. He served as Peru's president from 1945 to 1948, restoring press freedom and civil rights in his first days in office, until a military coup on 29 October 1948 forced him into exile. After returning to Peru in 1956 he was elected to the International Court of Justice in 1960 and served as its president from 1967 to 1969. The Organization of American States also called on him to mediate the 1969 conflict between El Salvador and Honduras known as the Football War. He died in Lima in 1989.
