Green Haywood Hackworth was an American jurist who lived from 23 January 1883 to 24 June 1973, born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky and educated at Valparaiso University, the University of Kentucky and George Washington University. He served as Legal Adviser to the United States Department of State from 1931 to 1946, the longest tenure in that office, working closely with Secretary of State Cordell Hull and representing the United States at the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conference that helped design the postwar United Nations system. He became the first American judge on the International Court of Justice when it was established in 1946, serving until 1961, and was elected the Court's President from 1955 to 1958.
