Mohamed Shahabuddeen, who lived from October 7, 1931, in Vreed en Hoop, British Guiana, to February 17, 2018, in Canada, was a Guyanese jurist and politician who began his career as a government lawyer in 1959 before serving as Guyana's Attorney General from 1973 to 1987, Minister of Legal Affairs from 1978 to 1987, and Vice President of Guyana from 1983 to 1988. He was a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1988 to 1997, then served as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia from June 1997 to May 2009, including two terms as its vice president, and was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration from 1998 to 2013. He was elected to the International Criminal Court in January 2009 but resigned the following month, before his term began, citing personal reasons.
