Max Huber (jurist)

International and Supranational Court Judges

Hans Max Huber was a Swiss lawyer and diplomat who lived from 28 December 1874 to 1 January 1960 and became one of the leading international jurists of the early 20th century. He studied law at the universities of Lausanne, Zurich and Berlin, earning his doctorate at Berlin in 1897, and taught constitutional law, canon law and public international law at the University of Zurich from 1902 to 1914. He represented Switzerland at the Second Hague Peace Conference of 1907 and headed the Swiss delegation to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, then served as a judge of the Permanent Court of International Justice from 1922 to 1939, presiding over the court from 1925 to 1927, and in 1928 he issued the influential arbitral award in the Island of Palmas case as sole arbitrator between the United States and the Netherlands. He also served as the first president of the Nansen International Office for Refugees from 1930 to 1933 and as president of the International Committee of the Red Cross from 1928 to 1944, guiding the organization through the Second World War.
