The Council of Brabant was the highest law court of the historic Duchy of Brabant, led by the chancellor of Brabant and charged with verifying that new legislation complied with the rights and liberties set out in the Joyous Entry of 1356. Headquartered in Brussels, it operated from 1430 until 1794, and its resistance to Emperor Joseph II's reform efforts in the late eighteenth century helped spark the Brabant Revolution. The French occupation of 1794 to 1814 brought about its final abolition, and the Belgian Federal Parliament now occupies the Council's former palace in Brussels.
