The Punjab and Haryana High Court is the common high court for the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, and it sits in Chandigarh. It has original, appellate and supervisory jurisdiction over matters arising in those territories. The court traces its lineage to the Lahore High Court, established in 1919, and after Partition a separate High Court of East Punjab was created in 1947 and first sat in Shimla. It was renamed the High Court of Punjab with the Constitution of India in 1950, moved to Chandigarh in 1955, and took its present name and form on 1 November 1966, when the Punjab Reorganisation Act created Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Its Palace of Justice was designed by Le Corbusier and is among the works inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2016. Several of its judges later became Chief Justice of India.
