Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice

Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice gathers the chief legal officers of national and subnational governments across every region represented in this subcategory: the attorneys general, ministers of justice, advocates general and equivalent offices, such as the Vatican City State's promoter of justice, whose holders lead a government's own legal department, represent the state in court and, in many of the countries represented here, personally shape or approve new legislation. Distinct from an elected legislator, a chief legal officer's authority over statute comes from executive appointment rather than election, but their role in drafting, reviewing and enforcing law is close enough to a modern legislator's own to belong in this subcategory rather than its own separate one, and their office recurs often enough across dozens of countries in this subcategory's own live membership to warrant its own group distinct from any single region.
