Westminster Magistrates' Court

Trial and First-Instance Courts

Westminster Magistrates' Court is a magistrates' court at 181 Marylebone Road in London. It opened on 22 September 2011 as the replacement for the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, and its building incorporates the facade of the old Marylebone Magistrates Court. The Chief Magistrate of England and Wales, who is also the Senior District Judge of England and Wales, sits there, and all extradition and terrorism-related cases in England and Wales pass through it. That gives a lower court a national role well beyond ordinary local summary work. The court has also heard unusual private prosecutions, among them a 2014 case in which a summons was issued to the then leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over claims under the Fraud Act 2006.
