The chief federal law enforcement officer for eight contiguous New York counties, an office of the United States Department of Justice established by the Judiciary Act of 1789. The office, under the name "Manhattan U.S. Attorney," announced the indictment of Ross Ulbricht, creator of the Silk Road marketplace, and prosecuted the resulting case in the Southern District of New York.
