The Supreme Court of Argentina, formally the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation or CSJN, is the highest court of law of the Argentine Nation. It was inaugurated on 15 January 1863 and works as a court of last resort whose rulings cannot be appealed. It decides questions of constitutional interpretation and can strike down a law passed by Congress that it finds unconstitutional. Its justices are nominated by the President and need the agreement of two thirds of the senators present, and they can be removed only by impeachment for improper conduct. The court sits in the Palacio de Justicia in the San Nicolas district of Buenos Aires, a building designed by Norbert Maillart and opened in 1910. For much of the twentieth century it lacked autonomy from the executive and several times accepted the legitimacy of military governments. A presidential decree of 2003 made the nomination process public, and in 1990 it had grown from five to nine members.
