Rhode Island Supreme Court

Supreme and Highest Courts of Last Resort

The Rhode Island Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the state of Rhode Island. It consists of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices, all selected by the Governor from candidates vetted by the Judicial Nominating Commission. Each justice has lifetime tenure and no mandatory retirement age, and may be removed only by impeachment in the House of Representatives and conviction by trial in the Senate. Its origin lies in a Superior Court of Judicature, Court of Assize, and General Gaol Delivery authorized by the General Assembly in 1747; it was renamed the Supreme Judicial Court in 1798 and the Supreme Court in 1843. Since 1930 it has sat in the Licht Judicial Complex in Providence.
