People’s Supreme Court of Cuba

National Supreme Courts (Last Resort)

The People’s Supreme Court of Cuba, called the Supreme People’s Court on its own site, heads the courts of the Republic of Cuba. The court dates from 14 April 1899, when it was constituted as a single chamber to impart justice, and the Organic Law of the Judicial Power of 27 January 1909 institutionalized it. Article 147 of the 2019 Constitution says that the function of imparting justice derives from the people and is exercised in their name by the Supreme People’s Court and the other courts that the law institutes. The current Law No 82 of 11 June 1998, the Law of the People’s Courts, gave its Government Council functions over the provincial and municipal courts that had belonged to the Ministry of Justice. The World Factbook archive lists the court president, a vice president, 41 professional justices and lay judges, and the court sits at Aguiar Street 367 in Habana Vieja, Havana.
