The Iowa District Courts are the state's trial courts of general jurisdiction, holding original jurisdiction over civil cases of any amount, felony criminal matters, domestic relations and family law cases, and matters involving minors such as adoption, dependency, juvenile delinquency and probate. They are a separate system from the federal United States District Court for the District of Iowa, with which they share only a similar name.
