The district courts of India are state government courts established for each district, or for several districts together, depending on caseload and population distribution, and they administer justice at the district level. A district and sessions judge, appointed by the governor on the advice of the High Court chief justice, heads each court and has supervisory control over additional and assistant district judges. The court is the principal court of original civil jurisdiction in the district and sits as a court of sessions in criminal matters. In designated cities with a population above one million the judge is styled a metropolitan session judge.
