The criminal court of first instance in England and Wales, responsible for hearing indictable offences, some either-way offences and appeals from magistrates courts. It is one of the three Senior Courts of England and Wales, sits at around ninety-two locations divided into circuits, and is known as the Central Criminal Court when sitting in the City of London. Colin Pitchfork was tried and pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court in January 1988, the first person convicted of murder using DNA profiling.
