The Court of Cassation is the highest of the three courts through which, in the text reported in April 2023, the judicial power of Vatican City State is exercised in the name of the Supreme Pontiff for the judging functions, the others being the Court and the Court of Appeal. GlobaLex describes it as the Supreme Court of Cassation of the State, primarily responsible for hearing appeals from the Court of Appeal, with original jurisdiction over penal matters against cardinals and bishops that the Pope does not handle personally. The judicial system rests on the law approved by John Paul II on 21 November 1987, in force from 1 January 1988, and on a new law of 16 March 2020, which ended the rule that the President of the Court of Cassation is ipso facto the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. Magistrates are appointed by the Supreme Pontiff and are subject only to the law.
