Court of Appeal of Kiribati

National Supreme Courts (Last Resort)

The Court of Appeal of Kiribati is established by article 90 of the Constitution as a superior court of record with such jurisdiction and powers to hear and determine appeals as any law in force in Kiribati confers. Its judges are the Chief Justice and the other judges of the High Court, together with such qualified persons as the Beretitenti, the President, may appoint on the advice of the Chief Justice sitting with the Public Service Commission, for a period or for particular causes. The President of the Court of Appeal is appointed by the Beretitenti on the advice of the Cabinet after consultation with the Public Service Commission, and any three judges of the Court may exercise all its powers. The World Factbook archive describes the legal system as English common law supplemented by customary law.
