The Colorado Supreme Court is the highest court of the U.S. state of Colorado. It sits in Denver and was established in 1876. It has a Chief Justice and six Associate Justices, appointed by the Governor from a list approved by a state judicial commission; each justice faces a retention election two years after appointment and every ten years after that, and must retire at age 72. The justices choose the chief justice from among themselves. The court mainly decides certiorari petitions arising from the Colorado Court of Appeals or the district courts, and it hears direct appeals in cases such as death penalty, water law and certain election matters. It also has original jurisdiction over attorney discipline and advisory questions, and supervises the state judicial branch and the rule making process.
