The Constitutional Court of Kosovo, known in Albanian as Gjykata Kushtetuese and in Serbian as Ustavni sud Kosova, is the final authority for interpreting the Constitution of Kosovo and for judicial review of laws to check that they comply with that constitution. It sits in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. The court was set up shortly after Kosovo declared independence and it heard its first cases in 2009, so it is a young institution whose case law has been built up within the framework of the new state's constitution. Its role is that of a specialised constitutional tribunal rather than a general court of appeal: it decides questions of constitutional interpretation and whether legislation is valid under the constitution.
