Anna Chandy, who lived from 1905 to 1996, was an Indian jurist who became the first female judge in India in 1937, when she was appointed a munsif, a junior civil judge, in the princely state of Travancore. In 1959 she reached a further milestone, becoming the first woman appointed to a High Court in India when she joined the Kerala High Court on February 9 of that year, a step regarded as among the first for a woman to a High Court anywhere in the British Commonwealth and one that drew attention from legal circles in the United Kingdom and Canada. She served on the Kerala High Court until her retirement on April 5, 1967.

Was Anna Chandy the first woman judge in the British Empire?
She was the first woman judge in India and one of the first in the British Empire.
Not on the sources recorded here. Wikipedia calls her the first female judge in India, appointed a munsif in Travancore in 1937, and the first woman to sit on an Indian high court, joining the Kerala High Court on 9 February 1959. For the wider empire it says only that she was one of the first female judges in the British Empire, so the first claim is limited to India. Her 1959 appointment drew attention in legal circles in the United Kingdom, Canada and other Commonwealth countries.
