Niger has been governed under a transitional charter rather than a constitution since 26 March 2025, when the document replaced the suspended 2010 constitution following the July 2023 military coup that brought junta leader Abdourahamane Tiani to power. The charter establishes Tiani as president for a five-year transitional period and declares Hausa the national language of Niger in place of French. It followed seven earlier constitutions since Niger's 1960 independence, the most recent being the 2010 constitution of the Seventh Republic that the junta suspended on taking power.
