Guinea-Bissau's 1984 constitution, in force since 6 May 1984 and revised in 1991, 1993 and 1996 as the country democratized, was suspended after a military coup on 26 November 2025, in which officers led by Brigadier General Dinis Incanha arrested President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and announced they had taken full control of the country. The military established a High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order and, on 9 December 2025, published a Transitional Charter to govern in place of the suspended constitution, barring both the coup leader and the prime minister from standing in elections planned to follow. This entity records the transitional document actually in force rather than the suspended 1984 constitution, following the same honest naming precedent set for Libya.
