Penal Code of Sri Lanka

Criminal and Penal Codes

The Penal Code of Sri Lanka, Ordinance No. 2 of 1883, is the island nation's criminal legislation, enacted during the British colonial period of Ceylon and still in force across the country. It comprises 22 chapters and 490 sections defining classes of offenses, providing general explanations, and setting out specific crimes against the state, against public servants, against property, and against persons. The code has been amended since independence, notably by the Penal Code (Amendment) Act No. 22 of 1993 and the Penal Code (Amendment) Act No. 16 of 2006, while retaining the structure inherited from British colonial law.
