Penal Code of Romania

The Penal Code of Romania is the country's foundational criminal law text, comprising 446 articles that define crimes and set minimum and maximum sentences within Romania's legal boundaries. The current version took effect on February 1, 2014, replacing the 1969 code that had been in force for 45 years, and it is the fourth major Romanian penal code of the modern era, following codes enacted in 1865, 1936 and 1969, each associated with a different political period, with the 2014 code framed to reflect contemporary European legal and democratic standards.
