The current Penal Code of Brazil was promulgated in 1940, during the Estado Novo regime, and has been in force since 1 January 1942. It is the third codification of Brazilian criminal law, succeeding earlier codes from 1830 and 1890, and one of its notable features is that it makes libel a crime.
