The Civil Code of Ethiopia (1960), officially titled the Civil Code of the Empire of Ethiopia under Proclamation No. 165 of 1960, was promulgated on 5 May 1960 by Emperor Haile Selassie I and entered into force on 11 September 1960, the first day of the Ethiopian calendar year 1953, published as an extraordinary issue of the Negarit Gazeta. The Code governs personality, family, successions, property, obligations and special contracts within Ethiopian law.
