Eight Prohibitions

Medieval and Early Modern Constitutional Charters

The Eight Prohibitions is an ancient criminal law code from the Korean peninsula, attributed by tradition to Jizi, a sage politician from China's Shang dynasty said to have led people to establish the state of Gija Joseon in Korea and enacted the law to educate and strengthen its people. The code addressed etiquette, agriculture, rice farming, sericulture, and weaving through eight prohibitions, though only three are fully documented today: capital punishment for murder, compensation in grain for causing injury, and enslavement or payment of recompense for theft. The Book of Han's Treatise on Geography is cited as the historical source for the surviving provisions, though no precise date for the code's enactment is recorded.
