The Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania is the primary source of Lithuanian criminal law, enacted alongside related codes covering criminal procedure, execution of punishments, and administrative violations. Its lineage traces back to the sixteenth century Statutes of Lithuania. A 1919 version drew on the Russian Criminal Code of 1903 but removed capital punishment, and after the Soviet occupation a new code took effect in 1961. The current code was enacted in 2000 and came into force in 2003, and it has been amended significantly since Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004.
