Crimes Act 1961

The Crimes Act 1961 is an act of the New Zealand Parliament and one of the principal sources of New Zealand criminal law, receiving royal assent on 1 November 1961 and coming into force on 1 January 1962. It consolidated and replaced the Crimes Act 1908, covering jurisdiction, punishment, defenses of justification and excuse, crimes against public order, crimes against the administration of law, sexual offenses, crimes against the person, property offenses and inchoate offenses across fourteen parts, while abolishing common law offenses but preserving common law defenses not otherwise altered by statute.
