The Tripartite Pact was the treaty of alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan, signed at Berlin on September 27, 1940. In six articles the three governments divided their spheres of leadership: Japan recognized the leadership of Germany and Italy in establishing a new order in Europe, and Germany and Italy recognized the leadership of Japan in a new order in greater East Asia. Article Three bound them to assist one another with all political, economic and military means if one of the three were attacked by a power not then involved in the European war or in the Chinese-Japanese conflict, and Article Five stated that the terms did not affect the existing political status between each signatory and Soviet Russia. The pact took effect on signature and was to remain in force for ten years, with negotiations on renewal to open at the request of any party before expiry. Joint technical commissions were to be appointed to carry it out.
