Togo adopted a new constitution on 6 May 2024, replacing the constitution of 1992 and following earlier constitutions from 1960, 1963 and 1979. The 2024 text shifts significant power from the presidency to parliament, establishing a parliamentary republic with a unicameral legislature in which a president serves as head of state and a president of the council of ministers, elected by parliament, serves as head of government.
