Nicaragua's constitution was adopted in 1987 following the Sandinista revolution that overthrew the Somoza family dictatorship in 1979, replacing the 1974 constitution under a government led by President Daniel Ortega after a transitional period overseen by the Junta of National Reconstruction. It replaced a bicameral Congress with a unicameral National Assembly of 90 directly elected members, retained a six-year presidential term with strong executive powers during national emergencies, and gave the president authority to present Supreme Court candidates and select the court's head.
