El Salvador's constitution was approved on 15 December 1983 and took effect on 20 December 1983, drafted by a 60-member Constituent Assembly elected in March 1982 and replacing the 1962 constitution, from which it retained some passages verbatim. It establishes a presidential republic with a single five-year term and no consecutive reelection, a unicameral Legislative Assembly and three branches of government across 274 articles organized into 11 titles, with one entrenched clause, article 248 paragraph 4, shielding certain provisions from amendment.
