Ecuador's current constitution was approved by referendum on 28 September 2008 with about 64 percent support, replacing the 1998 constitution as the country's twentieth since 1830. It was drafted by a Constituent Assembly that President Rafael Correa's PAIS Alliance party dominated with 74 of 130 seats, convening in Montecristi from November 2007 and completing a 494-article text by July 2008. With assistance from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, it became one of the first constitutions in the world to grant enforceable legal rights to nature and ecosystems.
