Dominica is governed under its own constitution as a parliamentary representative democratic republic, with a prime minister as head of government and a multi-party system. Executive power rests with the government, legislative authority is shared between the government and the House of Assembly, and the judiciary is independent of both the executive and the legislature. The president is elected by Parliament for a five year term, while the prime minister, who commands majority support in the House of Assembly, holds executive authority and can be removed through a vote of no confidence.
