Burkina Faso's original constitution was approved by referendum on 2 June 1991 and formally adopted on 11 June 1991. It was dissolved after the January 2022 coup, briefly restored on 31 January 2022, then suspended again following the September 2022 coup that brought Captain Ibrahim Traore to power. A revised text, incorporating amendments the transitional Parliament authorized in October 2024, was promulgated by Traore on 21 November 2024 and entered into force on 30 November 2024. The revision relegated French to secondary status behind national languages and added provisions on access to water, housing rights and civil disobedience; an earlier 2018 revision had set a ten-year cumulative limit on presidential terms.
