Constitution of Armenia

National Constitutions of Europe

The Constitution of Armenia is the fundamental law of the Republic of Armenia, in force in the text first adopted in 1995 and revised in 2015, with an earlier set of amendments made in 2005 that its own transitional provisions still refer to. Its preamble has the Armenian people adopt the constitution on the basis of the Declaration on the Independence of Armenia. The first chapter declares the state sovereign, democratic, social and ruled by law, places power with the people, makes the dignity of the human being the supreme value, guarantees multiparty politics and local self-government, and gives ratified international treaties priority over ordinary laws. Later chapters set out fundamental rights and freedoms, state policy goals in economic, social and cultural matters, the National Assembly, the President of the Republic, the Government, the courts with the Supreme Judicial Council and the Constitutional Court, the Human Rights Defender, the Central Electoral Commission and the central bank. It names Armenian as the state language and recognizes the special mission of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church.
