Code of Federal Regulations

The Code of Federal Regulations is the codification of the general and permanent regulations issued by the executive departments and agencies of the United States federal government. It is compiled and published annually by the Office of the Federal Register, part of the National Archives and Records Administration, working with the Government Publishing Office, and an Electronic Code of Federal Regulations is updated daily online. The Code is organized into fifty subject matter titles covering broad regulatory areas, and each title is further divided into chapters, parts, sections and paragraphs, so that a citation such as 42 C.F.R. Section 260.11(a)(1) points to an exact provision. The regulations it collects are created by federal agencies through rulemaking that implements statutory directives from Congress, and a new regulation is first published in the Federal Register before being folded into the Code.
