The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 was India's primary legislation governing the procedure of criminal law, setting out the machinery for investigating crime, apprehending suspects, gathering evidence, determining guilt and imposing punishment, as well as provisions on preventing public nuisance and family maintenance. It was enacted in 1973, received presidential assent on January 25, 1974, and came into force on April 1, 1974, superseding the earlier Code of Criminal Procedure of 1898. It was repealed on December 26, 2023 and replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which came into force on July 1, 2024, ending more than five decades in which the 1973 Code governed criminal procedure across India.
