Code of Civil Procedure (India)

The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 is India's foundational procedural law governing the conduct of civil court proceedings, enacted by the Imperial Legislative Council on March 21, 1908 and effective from January 1, 1909. It replaced the Code of Civil Procedure of 1882 and comprises 158 sections setting out the general principles of jurisdiction, together with a First Schedule of 51 Orders and Rules that prescribe the detailed procedures and methods governing civil suits. Despite significant amendments, including major revisions in 2002 and 2018, the 1908 framework has remained India's governing civil procedure code for over a century.
