Civil procedure code of Germany

The Zivilprozessordnung (ZPO) is Germany's code of civil procedure, governing how civil legal disputes proceed through the courts. Enacted as part of the Reich Justice Act legislation of 1877 and in force from October 1, 1879, it was designed, in its own drafters' words, to be practically usable and expedient, resolving legal disputes in the simplest, shortest and safest way. The code's structure and approach went on to significantly influence the civil procedure systems later adopted in Japan and Taiwan.
