The Civil Code of Quebec is the civil code in force in the Canadian province of Quebec, in effect since 1 January 1994 after receiving royal assent on 8 December 1991 under a bill introduced by Justice Minister Gil Remillard. It replaced the Civil Code of Lower Canada, which had been enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1865 and in force since 1866. The Code sets out the main rules governing the law of persons, the family, succession, property and civil liability in Quebec, and it also contains rules of evidence in civil matters and Quebec's own rules of private international law.
