The current Brazilian Civil Code is Law 10.406 of 10 January 2002, in force since 11 or 12 January 2003 following a one-year vacatio legis after its enactment under President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. It replaced the country's original civil code of 1916, Law No. 3,071, and expanded to 2,046 articles from that earlier code's 1,807, marking a significant unification of civil and commercial law into a single legal text.
