The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 is an Act of the Parliament of India that consolidates the rules and principles of evidence for fair trial, replacing the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 after more than a century and a half. It comprises 170 sections, modifying 23 of the earlier act's provisions, removing five, and adding one, and it received presidential assent on December 25, 2023, before commencing across India on July 1, 2024. The act governs the admissibility of evidence, witness testimony, documentary evidence, and burden of proof in Indian legal proceedings.
