Heinrich Brunner, born 21 June 1840 in Wels, Upper Austria, and who died 11 August 1915 in Bad Kissingen, Germany, was an Austrian legal scholar who studied at the Universities of Vienna, Gottingen and Berlin and specialized in early Germanic and Frankish law. He held professorships at Lemberg from 1866, then Prague, Strasbourg and Berlin, joined the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1884, and from 1887 supervised the legal texts section of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica until his death, the first legal scholar to lead a section of that project, overseeing re-editions of the Capitularia, the Lex Alamannorum, the Lex Burgundionum and the Lex Baiuvariorum. His most significant scholarly achievement traced connections between ancient Frankish legal procedures and English common law, demonstrating how Frankish practice inspired Henry II of England's Assize of Clarendon and thereby influenced the development of the English jury trial.
