Georges Ripert

Civil Law Scholars and Codifiers

Georges Ripert (1880-1958) was a French legal scholar known for influential treatises on civil, commercial and maritime law, including commercial-law works co-written with Rene Roblot and civil law texts building on Marcel Planiol's treatises. His other books included La Regle morale dans les operations civiles (1926) and Le Declin du droit (1949). He briefly served as Vichy France's Secretary of State for Public Instruction and Youth in 1940, a period in which he helped draft legislation excluding Jewish students and professors from universities, before returning after the war as an honorary professor at the Paris law faculty.

FAQs

How did Georges Ripert's time in the Vichy government end?

Pétain accepted his resignation in December 1940 and Ripert returned as Dean of the Paris law faculty.

Ripert was named Secretary of State for Public Instruction and Youth on 6 September 1940, and in that post until December 1940 he helped draft the first Jewish Statute, which excluded Jews from universities as students and teachers, and dismissed Jewish professors, including his pre-war friend René Cassin. On 13 December 1940 Philippe Pétain asked all ministers to sign a collective letter of resignation, and he accepted the resignations of Pierre Laval and Ripert. Ripert then returned to his position as Dean of the Faculty of Law of Paris.
