The Burgerlijk Wetboek is the civil code of the Netherlands. Its first version, based largely on the French Napoleonic Code, entered into force on 1 October 1838, and the code underwent a substantial modern reform beginning in 1992. Organized into ten books totaling roughly 3,000 articles, it covers the law of natural persons, legal persons, property, succession, obligations, contracts, transport law and conflict of laws.
