Goa Civil Code

The Goa Civil Code, also called the Goa Family Law, is the body of civil law governing residents of the Indian state of Goa and the territory of Daman, based on the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867 that was introduced there in 1870 when Goa became a Portuguese overseas province. It is an Indianized version of a Napoleonic derived Portuguese legal tradition, distinct from the English common law foundation of most Indian civil law, and was retained after Goa's 1961 merger into India even though Portugal itself replaced the original code in 1966. It applies uniformly to native Goans and Damanese regardless of religion, ethnicity or social strata, unlike most of India's religion specific personal law systems.
