All Civil Codes

The comprehensive civil law codes that a jurisdiction enacts to govern its private law: personal status, family relations, property, obligations, contracts, inheritance and civil liability, in a single systematic statute rather than scattered separate acts. Belongs here: a national or subnational civil code proper (the Napoleonic Code, the German Burgerliches Gesetzbuch, the Swiss Civil Code, a Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Latin American civil code, a historical compilation of personal or private law such as the Mecelle or the Gentoo Code), whatever its exact modern title. Does not belong here: a code confined to criminal law, court procedure, commercial or business regulation, administrative or municipal government, or building and technical standards, each of which has its own subcategory in this atlas; those sit in a separate subcategory even when the same country also has a civil code of its own.
